Semtech’s BlueRiverTechnology uses SDVoE to boost interactive meeting room displays, collaboration over video calls and joint whiteboarding sessions

Semtech announced Wednesday that Presentation Products Inc. (PPI), supplier of audiovisual design and integration solutions for the corporate, educational and hospitality markets, has created a Software Defined Video over Ethernet (SDVoE)-based solution leveraging Semtech’s BlueRiver Pro AV platform for Cooley LLP (Cooley), an international law firm.

The professional AV industry needs matrix switching capabilities, but no longer needs a matrix switch. At the core of a traditional AV switching system is the matrix switch. Typically this is a fixed piece of costly hardware with limited scalability, surrounded by external boxes to augment the switching capabilities with AV processing. Semtech’s BlueRiver comes with necessary requirements to completely displace the matrix switch.

BlueRiver’s comprehensive chipset and software API comprise the technology at the core of hundreds of interoperable Software Defined Video Over Ethernet (SDVoE) products. SDVoE is the most widely adopted standardized technology for distributing and managing AV signals in an off-the-shelf Ethernet network.

The complete turnkey hardware and software platform provides AV equipment manufacturers with zero-latency AV-over-IP capabilities. An intuitive interface allows control of complex tasks including video routing, scaling, aspect ratio management, video wall processing, image compositing and audio downmixing.

“Built for uncompromising performance, Semtech’s BlueRiver technology offered PPI the ideal technology base to develop solutions with processing capabilities beyond those possible with a traditional matrix switch,” said Kyle Balkcom, principal at PPI. “With BlueRiver, we are able to provide AV data transfer at near-zero latency and image resolution up to 4K60 4:4:4, creating flexible, scalable and standards-based SDVoE applications that allow our customers to work smarter and more efficiently.”

In 2017, Cooley sought to change the way its employees work together and provide an innovative means for collaboration at its New York City office. With five floors and 45 conference rooms, Cooley required an AV system that could handle and distribute data at near-zero latency throughout the approximately 130,000 square foot facility.

The company consulted with PPI and decided on an SDVoE-enabled AV-over-IP solution built on Aurora Multimedia’s line of BlueRiver-based 10 Gbps 4K transceivers. The system’s standards-based design enables the complete integration of devices from across the SDVoE ecosystem, while providing minimal compression on 4K media, future-proofing for higher resolution scaling and reliable data transfer over fiber.

The completed SDVoE-enabled system enables interactive displays throughout the office’s many meeting spaces, seamless collaboration over video calls and joint whiteboarding sessions with remote participants, as well as a two story BlueRiver-based video wall in the office lobby.

Semtech’s BlueRiver technology, brings the disruptive power of Ethernet to AV signal distribution, changing the dynamics of the Pro AV industry by allowing installers and OEMs to replace proprietary AV matrix switches with off-the-shelf Ethernet networks that deliver dramatically better price/performance, flexibility and scalability.

The BlueRiver platform delivers a single programmable system on chip (SoC), which can be used to replace traditional AV/KVM extenders, matrix switchers, video wall controllers and windowing processors with a simple network of transmitters, receivers and off-the-shelf Ethernet switches.

BlueRiver chipsets are the foundation of SDVoE technology offering zero-latency, uncompressed 4K streaming over standard Ethernet with unique support for HDMI 2.0a and HDR. They also integrate high-fidelity video scaling, windowing and audio downmixing.

“BlueRiver enables the replacement of traditional Pro AV circuit switching infrastructure with off-the-shelf Ethernet, providing much greater system flexibility and scalability along with substantial cost savings over traditional matrix designs,” said Don Shaver, Vice President of Video Products for Semtech’s Signal Integrity Products Group. “The technology creates SDVoE-based applications well suited to deliver the high quality AV data demanded by today’s leading corporations.”
