Philippine Telecom Company Launches First IoT Platform in the Country

PLDT, a Filipino telecommunications company, is set to launch the country’s first Internet of Things (IoT) platform at the Philippine Digital Convention (Digicon) in October.

Earlier this year, PLDT Enterprise and its wireless arm Smart Communications teamed up with Nokia for the Smart IoT platform. The tech is anticipated to transform how IoT is deployed and managed in the Philippines.

“We’re pleased to announce the launch of a platform which we strongly believe will revolutionize and transform the way our customers do business via the Internet of Things. We’re launching at Digicon and we’re extremely excited about the possibilities this platform can bring,” Jojo Gendrano, PLDT’s first vice-president and the head of PLDT Enterprise core business solutions group, said.

The platform will further complement PLDT Enterprise’s extensive solutions portfolio.

This year’s Digicon would serve as an avenue where industry experts, thought leaders, and international decision-makers will discuss novel ways of doing business. The organizers are expecting over 20,000 attendees from around the world.

The Digicon was established by PLDT Enterprise in 2014 to help drive technological enablement and advancement among enterprises throughout the Philippines.

“The (coronavirus) has in the last 18 months developed a number of variants, the most potent of which is the Delta variant and that has created ripple effect and impacts on people’s lives, on businesses and economy in general. So it poses new challenges, some of which can be best addressed by technology. And that is perhaps the main point of this convention,” PLDT chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said.

“There are many things that technology can do, and you need infra for that. But you also need the solutions to translate the infra into more than infra, but as a service as well,” he said.

As the Philippines ventures into new ground with the Smart IoT platform, more opportunities are available for Filipino businesses to innovate the way they do business. Despite ongoing challenges, solutions are set in place to continue and sustain growth.
