The Industrial Internet Consortium, Industrial Value Chain Initiative develop collaboration with joint workshop

The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), an organization transforming business and society by accelerating the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and the Industrial Value Chain Initiative (IVI), the forum of smart manufacturing for connected industries based in Japan, hosted their first joint workshop.

The workshop, attended by more than 220 professionals, followed the April 2017 signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two organizations.

The joint workshop provided an overview of the work of both organizations and comprised speeches from the IVI focused on smart manufacturing scenarios as well as the tools and models of the IVI reference architectures. Speeches from the IIC focused on use cases, testbeds in the manufacturing space and on building coalitions to address the IIoT ecosystem.

“The collaboration between the IIC and IVI is promising,” said Jacques Durand, Liaison Officer from the IIC for IVI and Director of IoT Engineering and Standards, Fujitsu. “The IVI has done advanced work on architectures and models for smart manufacturing, along with key operating scenarios. This is a great opportunity for the IIC to expand its frameworks and knowledge assets.”

The Industrial Internet Consortium aims to deliver a IIoT in which the world’s systems and devices are securely connected and controlled to deliver transformational outcomes. The Industrial Internet Consortium is a community of the Object Management Group (OMG).
The Industrial Value Chain Initiative (IVI), based in Japan, is a forum consisting of industrial and academic members that works on promotion of smart manufacturing for connected industries. It aims at fostering ecosystems by activities including provision of support to workgroups made up of member companies/organizations for creating use cases, coordination of platforms to provide the workgroups with solutions and compilation of specifications at different granularity from requirement specification of each workgroup to a reference architecture.

The IIC Liaison Working Group is the gateway for formal relationships with standards and open-source organizations, consortia, alliances, certification and testing bodies and government entities/agencies. The agreement with the IVI is one of a number of agreements made by the IIC’s Liaison Working Group and the joint workshop is one of many such joint workshops to follow liaison agreements.

“We are excited about this collaboration. This relationship enables the IVI to harmonize its work with the global requirements and frameworks that are being developed by the IIC. We look forward to future workshops and joint activities,” said Professor Yasuyuki Nishioka, president of IVI. “This is also an opportunity to leverage the IIC outreach as a global IIoT forum.”

“We look forward to continue working with the IVI to help further the development of the industrial Internet throughout Japan,” said Wael William Diab, chair, IIC Liaison Working Group and Senior Director, Huawei. “Collaboration relationships such as this are an important part of the ecosystem and help to advance the adoption of the industrial IoT.”
