Fibre Channel-NVM Express standard complete; Fibre Channel Industry Association schedules fourth plugfest focused on networking protocol

In a move that advances Fibre Channel (FC) as the trusted fabric for transporting NVM Express (NVMe) natively in data centers, the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) announced on Tuesday the International Committee on Information Technology Standards (INCITS) has published the FC-NVMe standard developed by the T11 Technical Committee.

The Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA) is a non-profit international organization whose sole purpose is to act as the independent technology and marketing voice of the Fibre Channel industry. It is committed to helping member organizations promote and position Fibre Channel, and to providing a focal point for Fibre Channel information, standards advocacy, and education.

FCIA members include manufacturers, system integrators, developers, vendors, industry professionals, and end users. Its member-led working groups and committees focus on creating and championing the Fibre Channel technology roadmaps, targeting applications that include data storage, video, networking, and storage area network (SAN) management.

“The FC-NVMe standard is focused on ensuring administrators and end-users who use NVMe over Fabrics that they will be guaranteed a high level of quality they’ve come to expect from Fibre Channel – the dominant storage networking protocol for SAN connectivity,” said Steven Wilson, chairman, T11 Technical Committee and director, Technology and Standards, Brocade Storage Networking division at Broadcom Inc. “Now that the FC-NVMe standard has been published, we continue to innovate with work on the FC-NVMe-2 specification, incorporating features such as NVMe sequence level error recovery.”

FC-NVMe configurations will be tested for methodology, interoperability and compatibility by participating FC companies, allowing customers to grow their storage infrastructure and take advantage of speed and functional improvements while leveraging current investments. FCIA-sponsored plugfests also allow participants to validate backward compatibility of FC products at 8GFC and 16GCF to new Gen6 32 GFC and 128 GFC products.

“Most mission-critical storage systems run on Fibre Channel today, and NVMe is poised to boost those mission-critical capabilities and requirements even further,” said Jeff Janukowicz, research vice president, IDC. “The next big thing in storage is already here with NVMe, which significantly improves performance by reducing latency and enabling high levels of parallelism. NVMe delivers faster flash storage, internal in the storage arrays, and will soon be available for host connectivity. NVMe is already available and supported today over Fibre Channel.”
