A Marriage of Convenience: How IoT and Connectedness Are Making Our Lives Easier

Thanks to easily accessible WiFi and other technological developments, the world in which we live has become decidedly more connected. And of course, the Internet of Things (IoT) has made everything exponentially more convenient because of its ability to connect appliances, mobile phones and vehicles. Through IoT’s sensors, collecting and exchanging data is made possible.

IoT has also made an impact on a global scale, revolutionizing emergency response and fighting climate change. Indeed, IoT has been integrated into many products and services that are used across the globe to not only make life more convenient but also improve the world.

  • Healthcare

IoT gadgets collect data constantly, so they’re ideal for the healthcare sector. Healthcare professionals can better monitor their patients’ condition through IoT-enabled wearables. Wearables also help medical professionals to make accurate diagnoses with their ability to observe trends and symptoms associated with various health conditions.

Wearables also help users better control and manage their health. For instance, smart inhalers have sensors connected to an app that help users monitor their condition and usage. In addition, wearables help ensure patients take their medications on time. What’s more, wearables allow users to benefit from highly customized treatments based on reports that wearables can generate for doctors.

The most common IoT gadgets used within the healthcare sector include patient monitors, energy meters, and X-ray and imaging machines. It’s a no-brainer, really: When IoT is applied to healthcare, it allows doctors and their patients to better understand their symptoms and conditions, remotely.

  • Smart Workplace

Smart buildings have effectively revolutionized traditional workspaces. Indeed, advancements in IoT in the automation and control of buildings have made life – and work – significantly easier for smart office occupants, owners, and building managers. Through IoT-activated analytics, occupants can control an office’s environment to make a workplace more satisfying, engaging and comfortable.

In addition, users can control ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, heating, and many other building features. Smart workplaces can also track the number and location of employees present in a building at any given time, their location, along with the number of conference rooms in use.

Using IoT in the workplace makes employees more productive since it makes building operations digital and data collation easier. In other words, document exchange and collaboration are much more seamless because of better connections, making a workplace more efficient. As a result, facility managers can save time instead of sifting through large amounts of disorganized data.

  • Smart Homes

Smart homes are becoming more popular by the minute. Many homeowners choose to use IoT in their homes because controlling their environments is quite simply, well, simpler. With just a smart home app installed on a smartphone, a homeowner can make custom adjustments. In this way, IoT can provide peace of mind, convenience and security. It is also energy-saving and can help make house-related issues stress free.

For example, a smart lighting device can detect if people present and adjust the lighting levels accordingly. Because these smart lighting devices are connected, they can interact and gather user information, making it possible for a smart home to know your preferences through your routines and habits.

In addition to adjusting temperature or lighting, smart homes also help the environment by allowing users to consume energy only when necessary. For instance, a smart home system can automatically switch off a light if a person leaves a room and forgets to turn it off.

  • Vehicles

Many vehicles can be easily connected to smartphones, giving drivers real-time information about traffic situations. Cloud- and internet-enabled vehicles can handle loads of data every day, data which can be used to improve a car’s entertainment, maintenance of vehicles, and road use. IoT-enabled vehicles also can update their components, which saves drivers trips to the manufacturer.

IoT-enabled cars also make finding parking spaces easier. For example, on average, drivers in the UK spend about 91 hours each year searching for parking spaces. Since IoT can help cut this time, it can also cut the amount of pollution a car emits when searching for a parking spot.

  •  Fitness

IoT has a significant effect on the way people work out and maintain active lifestyles. Indeed, many fitness apps and trackers provide accurate data on a user’s activity level and calorie burning. IoT also helps the fitness industry, allowing gym owners to monitor the number of people who go to their gym and the peak times they visit. IoT can also help gym owners monitor and forecast the lifecycle of their equipment.

Life Made Easier

IoT has managed to make virtually every facet of life – whether it’s at home or work, or in the car or gym – easier and more convenient. And it doesn’t end there: Many companies across various industries are also using IoT to develop, automate, regulate, and simplify their processes. Needless to say, Internet of Things has become mainstream with more to come.
